South Carolina Public School Bans US Flags to Avoid Offending "Hispanic Community"

(UPDATE: the school has changed its policy after intense backlash in the media. This is a common tactic of public schools: to attempt to institute tyrannical and/or ridiculous policies in the dark, and then quickly "reconsider" the policy if they receive bad press.)

In another example of extreme political correctness and Anti-Americanism on public school campuses, a school in South Carolina has banned American flags from their football games.

Apparently this school has a history of banning American patriotic symbols such as the flag. The victim's brother reported the following on Facebook:

"Last night I picked my brother up from the TRHS Football game and he told me that Lavely [the principal] had denied entry to a couple of young men with Americans flag. I can't deny the rage I felt as this is the third incident I've had involving Lavely and the flag I love.

First, the day after Osama was killed in 2011 we were told we couldn't have the American flag on our trucks on school property and the TRPD came and handled the situation. Lavely later apologized to our group.

Second, I was picking up my youngest brother and saw two high school boys handling our flag with disrespect at the flag pole as they let it drag the ground and it acted like it was not an issue.

Third, last night as I took the flag and attempted to enter myself he stated, "he has the authority to tell anyone they can't bring it on the property." Unfortunately the cops were not helpful and sided with Lavely even after stating "you'd probably win if you took it to the school district." I'm no expert and don't know the laws in and out. But.. if he has the power to strip Americans the right to boast the American flag after being pumped up about our Olympic run there is a much bigger problem. A problem that need to be resolved."

Of course, people can write whatever they want on Facebook, and we are not 100% sure that the first two incidents alleged in this person's Facebook post actually occurred, but the principal released a statement completely admitting that the American flag was banned from the football game. The principal claimed that seeing the American flag might offend Hispanic students.

This principal must be removed by the county school board for this conduct. South Carolina is a conservative area, especially when compared to a place such as Fairfax. The school board would easily vote to remove this person, if only someone would introduce such a measure.

If "Hispanic students" are really offended by the American flags, maybe they should not have immigrated to America.

Nonetheless, this school has violated the Constitution by illegitimately restricting student free expression. While of course, the Supreme Court is not the definitive authority on the Constitution, it ruled in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District that schools cannot legally restrict student speech "within the schoolhouse gates" unless it will create a "substantial disruption."

If waving an American flag will result in a "substantial disruption", the school has clearly failed in teaching history and government.

But my view is that there was no chance of a "substantial disruption." The principal just had an ideological axe to grind and decided to use his power as principal to grind that axe. He should be removed from his position immediately!
