Teacher Refuses To Show "Mr." Trump's Inaugural Address

A fourth grade teacher in Michigan has declared that although he will show his class the live inauguration of President-Elect Donald J. Trump, he will censor Trump's actual inaugural address, citing false media reports that Trump has made derogatory statements about "minorities and the disabled."

Brett Meteyer, who teaches at Explorer Elementary School near Lansing, sent a letter to parents, leaked to a local conservative radio host, explaining why he showed the full speeches of Presidents Barack Obama and George Bush during their inauguration, but believes that President Trump is somehow different.

Dear Parents,
Because I am concerned about my students and your children being exposed to language and behavior that is not in concert with the most conservative social and family values, I have decided to show the inauguration of Donald Trump this Friday, but we will not view Mr. Trump's inauguration speech. Because every peaceful transition of power is a historic moment, I put in a request to the Trump team to preview the speech, but I have not heard back from them.
I showed the speeches of Presidents Obama and Bush in 2009 and 2005, respectively, but I am anxious about showing Mr. Trump's inaugural address, given his past inflammatory and degrading comments about minorities, women, and the disabled. I am also uneasy about Mr. Trump's casual use of profanity, so I sought an assurance that as their teacher, I would not be exposing children to language that would not appear in G- or PG-rated movies.
I do not know if Mr. Trump's speech is something that would be provided to the press or concerned citizens beforehand, but these plans may change if I hear back from them.
Brett Meteyer

In Meteyer's letter, he appeared to mock parents who held conservative views by apparently blaming them for why he is refusing to show the speech. He disingenuously warned about "Mr. Trump's" so-called "casual use of profanity." Does he really think President Trump will use profanity in his inaugural address? If he does, he obviously never should have been hired as a teacher.

This teacher must learn that such childish, obnoxious, and disrespectful behavior is not productive. In sending the letter, he probably knew it would be leaked, and assumed that he would be lionized by the liberal media for "protecting students from the vitriol of the campaign cycle." Instead, it has backfired and his name and photo is all over the internet and he is now facing calls for his firing.

The superintendent has not responded to the media firestorm over Meteyer's letter. This is why it is imperative to contact the school and district - to make them take a stand about whether or not this is acceptable. Appropriate contact information is posted below:
